About the major
The international, English-language degree program Theology / Development Studies complements theological and intercultural competencies with the subject areas of development cooperation and humanitarian aid. The subject focus is approximately two-fifths on development cooperation/humanitarian aid, two-fifths on theology, and approximately one-fifth on interculturality and religious studies. The high practical relevance is emphasised by a compulsory semester abroad as well as an internship semester, which can be carried out in a relevant organisation in Germany or abroad.
The program equips students with knowledge, skills, and competencies to lead, teach, and respectfully collaborate in teams in their specific field of work. Furthermore, the program enables students to be self-directed learners and instills an enjoyment of lifelong learning.
The program is taught in English. If the lecture schedule allows, some courses can also be taken in German. Exams can be taken in German or English, subject to approval by the examiners.

- the regulations valid for the state of Baden-Württemberg for admission to academic programs at a university of applied sciences (for further information, please contact international@ihl.eu)
- voluntary work of the applicant in a Christian congregation, Christian community or in a Christian youth association, usually for at least one year,
- the affirmation of the objectives of IHL in the sense of the University Statutes, the respect for the beliefs of others and a willingness to deal with the contemporary relevance of the Biblical message
- adequate knowledge of the English language

During the studies
Structure of the program
Structure of the program
The lower division courses take two-years. They teach the basics of Biblical, systematic and intercultural theology as well as development cooperation in 18 courses. All lower division classes conclude with an examination.
The higher division courses, which also take up two years of the program, include 8 compulsory classes and a course catalogue of 18 classes, from which 2 courses must be completed with an examination. All other courses serve to acquire the required CPs.
A mandatory internship semester (30 CP) takes place in the 5th or 6th semester in a relevant organisation either in Germany or abroad. A semester abroad with the possibility of crediting approx. 24 CPs is also mandatory. Together with the accompanying course „Organizing a Study Abroad Semester“ (6 CP), 30 CPs will be achievable during this semester.

The program is designed as a full-time, face-to-face program. One semester comprises 14 weeks of lectures and three weeks of exams. The Liebenzell Mission’s Student Services arrange on-campus and off-campus housing.

The lectures take place on campus of IHL. There, well-equipped classrooms as well as the library with an extensive range of services are available.
Bad Liebenzell is a spa and health resort town in the northern Black Forest. It is located about 20 kilometers south of Pforzheim and belongs to the district of Calw. (Calw itself has a picturesque old town and is the place of birth of the famous German author Hermann Hesse). Bad Liebenzell is on the one hand situated in the Northern Black Forest Nature Park and on the other in the periphery of the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart. Hence, this place of study combines the natural idyll of the Black Forest with the opportunities of a large city right on its doorstep.
Besides the castle of Bad Liebenzell as a main feature, the town is also characterized by the so-called Mission Hill, where our campus is located. There you will find well-equipped seminar rooms as well as the library with its extensive range of respective services. Our 360° tour of the mountain offers a first impression.

Internship semester
A compulsory internship semester (30 CP) is part of the degree program Theology and Development Studies. It takes place in the 5th or 6th semester in a relevant organisation either in Germany or abroad.
During the internship semester, students familiarize themselves with the with the conditions that determine the respective field of practice by taking on tasks to be completed independently. The practical activities are carried out under professional supervision by the internship provider and the academic supervision of the IHL module coordinators.

The Student Services Division (SLG) is a department of Liebenzell Mission (trustee agency of IHL). Its concern is to promote the character and spiritual development as well as the social and practical competence of the students through very different offers.

Job profile
The degree is designed to enable employability in international (Christian) NGO’s, FBO’s, aid agencies and mission societies. In the context of Christian development cooperation and missionary work, there is a great need for employees who possess the competencies sought in this degree program and are able to think in a networked manner and develop individual approaches to solutions for a wide variety of problem situations in a globalized and increasingly complex living environment.
The following professional fields are in view:
- Development worker in international development organizations, especially in so-called Faith Based Organizations (FBOs),
- Professional work in German or European development and humanitarian aid organizations,
- Educational and lobbying work with international, Christian aid organizations, NGOs and FBOs,
- Professional work in a church or in independent missionary organizations
